APNEA MONITORS

Apnea is a sleep disorder that makes its sufferers to stop breathing for at least 10 seconds while asleep. This condition is dangerous as it could lead to death. There are 3 types of apnea:

1. Obstructive sleep apnea

2. Central sleep apnea

3. Mixed Apnea

Medical devices used to monitor sleep apnea are known as apnea monitors. Some are designed for home use while others are designed to be tested in hospitals and others in sleep laboratories. There are apnea monitors for adults and for children.

Preterm babies are predisposed to sleep apnea due to their respiratory systems that are not fully developed.

Apnea could lead to a drop in oxygen level in the affected person's blood. It is the main reason pulse oximeters are incorporated to monitor oxygen saturation in the patient.

Some apnea monitors are small in size and attached to the forehead. An example is Somnibel.
